Hancock, Michigan, is home to a truly unique celebration: Heikinpäivä.

Since its creation in 1999, this festival has drawn deep inspiration from the rich culture and folklore of Finnish immigrants who settled in the area to work in Keweenaw's copper mines. Held in January, Heikinpäivä is more than a festival—it’s a heartfelt homage to Finnish-American heritage and a joyful burst of midwinter cheer that brings the community together during the long Keweenaw winters.

With a month of activities leading up to the main event in late January, Heikinpäivä offers something for everyone. The headliner day features a colorful parade inspired by Finnish legends, a lively wife-carrying contest, kicksled races, musical performances, cultural and craft workshops, and a traditional Finnish contra-dance accompanied by live music.
