“The lake is so calm, the breeze is so light, and the sun is so brilliant in the blue sky that it feels like a surreal Midwest summer day [even though it’s January]. On the spiritual patina scale, this sauna rates about a nine. It would be a perfect 10 if our sauna never had to end.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Superior in Eagle Harbor, Michigan, Takka Superior is our flagship sanctuary—where our passion for authentic sauna experiences first took root

Located at the gateway to the Keweenaw Peninsula, Takka Portage offers relaxing social and private sauna experiences with serene views of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge in Hancock, Michigan.

Four people with their arms around each other, seen from behind. One person is wearing a scarf on their head, another has a denim jacket, and another is wearing sunglasses. They appear to be outdoors, enjoying a scenic view together.
A small, modern cabin with a dark exterior and a sloped roof sits surrounded by tall evergreen trees. Two Adirondack chairs and a person are visible on the porch, which overlooks a rocky, forested landscape under a cloudy sky.

The tradition of Takka.

Sauna is the only Finnish word in the English dictionary. We’re here to work toward adding anotherTakka. The literal translation of takka is fireplace. We’ll honor that idea while adding another component: bringing our community together around fire.

At the core of Takka lies the cherished Finnish sauna tradition, an age-old practice reimagined to create an unparalleled sanctuary of heat and harmony. Each visit is an encounter with authenticity, offering an experience to calm your body, relax your mind, and transcend the ordinary.

Gather around our fireside to bask in the afterglow of your experience, create new connections, and enjoy the splendor of Michigan’s natural magic.

160° F

Heat up

Hot therapy, such as sauna sessions averaging around 160 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, can promote relaxation, increase circulation, and aid in muscle recovery by stimulating blood flow and inducing sweat to release toxins.

44° F

Chill Out

Cold therapy, like plunging into Lake Superior with temperatures around 32 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, can reduce inflammation, boost immune function, and improve circulation by causing blood vessels to constrict and then dilate, enhancing oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues.

Take me to Takka

Way up at the northernmost point of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you'll find a resilient community of nature lovers. The trails, lakes, and adventures are never far from our hearts and we love them so much that we're willing to live through 300+ inches of average annual snowfall. Here we are, a peninsula on a peninsula living in land they almost always leave off the map. You'll find the spirit of Takka alive and well throughout the UP but our two locations in the Keweenaw Peninsula offer the hot and cold escapes you need to experience.

So –– are you recovering from a tough workout? Did you mess up your back from shoveling snow? Or maybe you had a couple too many whiskey sours last night, or you’re craving a good night’s sleep. Maybe you’ve just been needing to take some time out for yourself to simply relax. We’ve got you.

Above all, we hope you’ll use Takka as a form of preventative care for your body and your mind. So bring a friend, or maybe make a new one – and come embrace the way we do cold.
